The other day I had lunch with my friend Philip. He is “This” at “this, that & the other”. We were talking about distraction and sedation. I had once said to him “clarity is so much more interesting than distraction” and it struck a chord. I can’t remember saying that but.. I totally agree with […]
Eps 41: The Faces Of The World
This website and my works central theme is warriorship and human bravery. “The essence of warriorship, or the essence of human bravery, is refusing to give up on anyone or anything” said Chögyam Trungpa, the great Tibetan spiritual teacher that I like to study and often use as a source of inspiration. When I looked through the pics below I was reminded to his words. There is so much beauty and sadness in the pictures and at the same time so much love and bravery that it reminds us of our humanity, our diversity and our obligation to ourselves and others to not give up on opening our hearts and taking care of each other.
Eps 40: Meet The Warriors
This is us. This is us after 3 weeks of warrior practice. We had a ‘before’ pic in mind but things happened and it became a ‘3 weeks into the 100 Day Warrior program’ pic. We are not the same people that started the program. On this pic we have 17,25 kg less body fat and 9,29 kg more muscle mass than 3 weeks earlier. That’s just the physical effects of 21 days of training. You can read about the reported mental effects of 38 days of warrior training here.
EPS 39: PEOPLE DON’T CONSCIOUSLY HURT EACH OTHER
PEOPLE DON’T CONSCIOUSLY HURT EACH OTHER, THEY ARE MERELY PROTECTING THEIR OWN WOUNDS. I REALIZED THAT WHEN I DISCOVERED HOW MY OWN WOUNDEDNESS HAD BEEN WORKING OR IN OTHER WORDS: WHEN MY OWN WOUND WAS REVEALED TO ME. BEFORE THAT HAPPENED I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS WOUNDED. AFTER THAT REALIZATION I KNEW THAT EVERYBODY WAS WOUNDED BUT WE COVER IT UP. WE HIDE IT FOR OURSELVES AND OTHERS. THAT IS WHY WE FEAR VULNERABILITY. THAT’S WHY OUR DEFAULT ANSWER TO ‘HOW ARE YOU’ ALWAYS IS ‘GREAT!’
Eps 38: 7 Benefits Of The 100 Day Warrior (Report After Only 38 Days)
It was the first time since the beginning of the course that I spend some informal time with my participants and it was also the first time that we met as a small delegation of our group. It is funny to see us all drink water while surrounded by beer and wine drinking people. And of course the topic comes on the 100 Day Warrior program and their progress. I could listen to their experiences and was happy with what I heard.
Eps 37: Ideally The Creative Process Becomes Like Great Sex
I just realized that creativity is connected to creation and therefore related to sex. It is an intimate interaction that something new and unique can be born from. Creativity comes from being in relationship with what is. There is a kind of fluid communication going on between you and the world and when the coward doesn’t show up to interfere with the process magic can be conceived.
Eps 36: No Such Thing As A Half-Assed Warrior
Let me be clear, very few people ever arrive at that place, the place where the coward feels he has to scream. Most of us are comfortably ruled by the coward, he never has to raise his voice and there are no warriors in sight making his life difficult. Let me put it differently: if you don’t know what it feels like to have a terrified coward yelling at you every day he is the one steering your ship.
Eps 35: Why We Don’t Support Our Friends Too Much On Social Media
We fear judgment by others, loss of social status, failure and and the feeling of being inadequate. Also we fear intimacy and vulnerability. Imagine endorsing all the work of somebody close to you. What do you say next time you see him? You are afraid it will be awkward, right? Perhaps he will start thinking you look up to him, or that your are kissing his ass. We don’t want to give up our position: preferably a superior position but at least somewhat horizontally. Of course this all changes when our friend becomes officially famous. Now our relationship boosts our social status so it is safe to endorse him.
Eps 34: Everyday Stupidity
I want to give you two examples of remarkable thickness that happened to me this week. Not sure if there is any wisdom to be found but perhaps it is entertaining.
At the beginning of this week I broke the key of my chain lock. In Amsterdam you need such a lock to attach your bike to a fixed object, like a bridge or a streetlight. It was not the key itself that was broken but the top part so it was like I was holding a thick toothpick instead of a key.
Eps 33: Be Flexible
A fisherman was driving his boat towards the shore of the river. At some point he sees another boat coming in his direction. He signals the boat with lights, making sure he is seen. But the other boat doesn’t change his course. Now according to local rules the fisherman has right of way and he starts shouting at the other boat, since that boat is now within shouting distance. But the boat doesn’t change his course.
