That I met with Said Bensellam no coincidence. I read an article about him in the newspaper some time ago. The title was something like ‘Warrior for a good cause’. I tore it out and put it in my pocket. I forgot about it and found it again. I thought of throwing it away because who am I to think he would want to meet with me? But then a surge of courage went through me and I wrote him a short message on social media. And I received a very friendly and humble message back saying that he was inspired by my website and interested to learn about my work. Can you believe it?
10 learnings from my 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat
No iPhone for ten days. That was enough to scare me. Add this: no talking, no reading, no writing, no snacking, no exercising, no physical or eye contact with anyone around, no sex … and I freaked out. Just enough to be attracted to the idea of conquering this fear and book a Vipassana meditation […]
Want to Learn Something About Yourself Now? Do The Quick Warrior Test
Want to know what it feels like to be a warrior? Dive into the exersizes in this post and evaluate the experience: let thoughts and feelings come up freely after finishing the first question and repeat that evaluation after finishing answering the second question. Then look inside yourself and answer a third question: how do I want to live?
The Need For Vulnerability
The root of the word courage is cor—the Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage had a very different definition than it does today. Courage originally meant “To speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” Over time, this definition has changed, and, today, courage is more synonymous with being heroic. Heroics is important and we certainly need heroes, but I think we’ve lost touch with the idea that speaking honestly and openly about who we are, about what we’re feeling, and about our experiences (good and bad) is the definition of courage.
Skills Training at Vondelgym
As you might know or remember, the 100 Day Warrior has found a new home in January. I opened a zendo on Nieuwe Herengracht 95, providing me with my first personal meditation and training space and the trainers and me started collaborating with the new gym in town: Vondelgym. One of the founding fathers of […]
Good That We Have a Clown Like John Oliver To Ridicule The Tobacco Industry
Every day I read and hear so many stunning examples of our human ignorance that I alternate between wanting to slam my head on the table and going numb. Then I get sucked back into the feeling of paralysis; the feeling that humanity is beyond repair. But then I realize that I really don’t want to live in such a cynical world and I am reminded that I want to be part of a tribe that contributes to consciousness and compassion
The Basic Goodness Zendo Is Open!
The best thing I did in 2014 was designing and organizing the first episode of the 100 Day Warrior. It was hard work and a lot of pressure to make it happen but once we took off we gained momentum and it was awesome. Arguably the best thing I did in 2015 was opening my […]
Beyond The Thoughts Lies Freedom
During the 100 Day Warrior the invitation is to explore the space beyond our comfort zones. The easiest way is to surrender to the program and let the experience unfold. But this is usually not how most of us are wired. We are filled with opinions, expectations and beliefs. So we question and negotiate. The interesting part is to explore why we question and negotiate. We fear influence and negative experiences, we fear what we do not know.
A Spiritual Path Is About Starting All Over Every Day
I was trying to come up with a relevant topic for this post. I wasn’t sure what to pick or where to start. I didn’t write for so long: what to say? Should I explain myself? Defend myself? Come up with justifications? Today I had an interaction with one of the participants of the 100 […]
Day 13 (Guest Post) How To Reconnect Your Body And Soul By Eating Real Food
Over the past two weeks the participants in the 100 Day Warrior program have been making a solid attempt to “reset” their bodies through a diet plan. As a true foodie I have been experimenting with different types of diets and food ideologies throughout my life, making many mistakes and learning many lessons. In this post I would love to share some of my insights and show you what I believe is a healthy path towards soulful eating, by eating real food and listening to your body. This might be interesting for my fellow participants, and for anyone who’s curious how to implement a healthy take on eating into their busy lives.
