Today is the shortest day of the year and we are at the beginning of a new cycle. In our longest night, our deepest darkness, is where springs our new sparks of hope and our eternal inner fire is rekindled again. Tomorrow we celebrate the rebirth of the sun. Today is also day 99 of the 100 Day Warrior. Tomorrow we celebrate the birth of the warriors; our last day obviously being a new beginning. How beautiful. I didn’t plan it like that on purpose and I am a sucker for such symbolism.
The poem below was posted on my Facebook wall by a special Facebook friend with the name Hampton. I have never met him but he wrote to me in January 2012 after stumbling on a post of mine that was about visiting my grandparent’s graves at the beginning of my long journey around the world. He told me he shared the post with a German friend who experienced reading the article as ‘a sacred moment in his life’ which is of course magical to hear: somewhere on the planet some other other soul benefits from what I went through at the time (it must have been this post or this post). He wanted me to know. Since that moment Hampton and I are connected through Facebook and I always feel supported by him. He sees me. And in the same way my post came timely for his friend, his poem came timely for me.
This poem is for my warriors and for everybody who reads it. But it is especially for the girl who showed up in my life only 6 days ago and with whom I shared a couple of very profound and mystical moments. I hope and trust that this poem will resonate with her heart like it does with mine.
WINTER SOLSTICE
Perhaps
for a moment
the typewriters will stop clicking,
the wheels stop rolling
the computers desist from computing,
and a hush will fall over the city.
For an instant, in the stillness,
the chiming of the celestial spheres will be heard
as earth hangs poised
in the crystalline darkness, and then
gracefully
tilts.
Let there be a season
when holiness is heard, and
the splendor of living is revealed.
Stunned to stillness by beauty
we remember who we are and why we are here.
There are inexplicable mysteries.
We are not alone.
In the universe there moves a Wild One
whose gestures alter earth’s axis
toward love.
In the immense darkness
everything spins with joy.
The cosmos enfolds us.
We are caught in a web of stars,
cradled in a swaying embrace,
rocked by the holy night,
babes of the universe.
Let this be the time
we wake to life,
like spring wakes, in the moment
of winter solstice.– Rebecca Parker
