I would like to ask you something. Contemplate on the following for a couple of minutes:
“When you do things from your soul,
you feel a river moving in you, a joy.”
– Rumi
Do you know the river that Rumi is talking about? Can you discern Rumi’s river from the glowing pride that success can give you? It’s a different movement. You can be successful from a conventional point of view, well paid and appreciated, perhaps even respected or admired. But you might not feel the river.
Some of you know where to find the river but don’t have the guts to jump in because you fear where the current will take you.
If you have no concept of what ‘doing something from your soul’ means I recommend observing the feelings that the words bring up. If you feel jealousy, anger, irritation or disbelief or the impulse to discard Rumi’s words, you might have some work to do. A negative response is a mechanism that your ego uses to avoid self-inquiry. But trust me, that river is inside you too.
If you spend your days doing stuff that is impossible to do from your soul, you are violating yourself. Many of us betray our souls day in day out. It is sad and painful that we are conditioned that way. but it is your responsibility to do something about it.
When you do things wholeheartedly your work will energize you. If what you do exhausts you you are neglecting your soul, one way or the other.
Think about that. Is this how you want to live? Is this how you think you should live?
